NIOSH (NOES Survey 1981-1983) has statistically estimated that 1,358 workers (956 of these were female) were potentially exposed to delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol in the US(1). Occupational exposure to delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol may occur through inhalation and dermal contact with this compound at workplaces where delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol is produced. Limited monitoring data indicate that the general population may be exposed to delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol via inhalation, ingestion, and dermal contact with contaminated air and water. The general population may also be exposed via inhalation of marijuana smoke both from the illicit substance as well as ingestion and inhalation of pharmaceutical products containing delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol(SRC).
